Privacy Policy

We respect your privacy. This page explains what we collect and why.

Information we collect

Newsletter

The Cost of Your Time signup form collects one thing: your email address. No name, no company, no anything else. It is opt-in twice over, because typing an address into the form does not subscribe you. We send a confirmation link to that address and nothing happens until you click it, so nobody can put you on the list but you.

The address goes to Brevo, the service that stores the list and delivers the emails. Brevo is the processor and the list of record. Brevo is a French company and stores contact data on servers in the European Union. Dollars Per Second keeps no copy of your address: not in our database, not in our logs, not in analytics.

We never sell your address, and we never share it with anyone other than Brevo for the purpose of sending you the emails you asked for.

The signup form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA Enterprise (through Firebase App Check), which tells our server that a submission came from a real browser. reCAPTCHA loads only when you focus the address field, not when you read the essays, and when it does Google receives your IP address and browser signals to make that judgement. The Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply to that check. Your email address is not part of it.

Every essay email carries an unsubscribe link. Use it and you are off the list, no reply needed and no questions asked, and Brevo stops storing your address. You can also email dmk@ourania.world to be removed or to ask what is held about you, and it is handled by a real person. We keep your address only for as long as you stay subscribed.

Contact form

The contact form on the Contact page collects your email address, your message, the kind of message you picked, and a name if you choose to give one, along with the page you sent it from, your browser type, and your account id if you are signed in. That is what we need to answer you and nothing more.

Each message is stored in our Firestore database, where only the site owner can read it, and a copy is delivered by Brevo to the owner's mailbox so it gets answered. Nothing from the form goes into analytics or advertising. The form is protected by the same reCAPTCHA Enterprise check as the newsletter signup, described above.

Messages are kept for as long as it takes to deal with them and for at most twelve months, then deleted. Email dmk@ourania.world to have yours removed sooner or to ask what is held.

Premium accounts

When you subscribe to Premium, Stripe handles the checkout and tells our server it went through. We keep a small record of that: your email address, your Stripe customer id, the plan you chose, and whether the subscription is active. It lives in Firebase and only the payment webhook writes it. We keep it for one reason: when you sign in with that email, with Google or with an email address and password, the site can see the record and unlock Premium in your browser. Signing in also creates a Firebase Authentication account holding that email address, the time you signed in, and, for Google sign-ins, the name and photo Google shares. A password account gets one verification email from Firebase Authentication. Ask at the address below to have the account removed. Your card details never touch the site. They live with Stripe, and we never see the number.

When a checkout completes, the site fires a Google Ads conversion tag and GA4 purchase events. Those carry the Stripe checkout session id, the plan, and the price, and nothing else: no card data and no email address.

To have your Premium record deleted, email dmk@ourania.world from the address you subscribed with. Deleting the record ends Premium access on every device, and if the subscription is still running we cancel it for you first.

Cookies

We may use essential cookies for site operation and optional cookies for analytics. You can block cookies via your browser.

Advertising

Dollars Per Second uses Google AdSense and Google Ads to show ads on the meter page and on essay pages. Google and its partners may set advertising cookies and use device or ad identifiers to personalize ads and measure their performance. This is separate from your meeting data, which stays in your browser as described above.

You can opt out of personalized advertising, or learn more about the data used for ads, at Google's Ads Settings page.

Data sharing

We do not sell personal data. Limited third-party services (e.g., Stripe for payments, Brevo for newsletter delivery, Google reCAPTCHA Enterprise for the signup form, analytics, Google AdSense/Ads) may process data to provide the service.
